The Faculty of Medicine, was established on 30 May 1972 as a medical institution to carry out medical and nursing training activities, medical research and clinical services, under the administration of a Dean. In the beginning, clinical training for medical students and medical services provided by lecturers were carried out at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), which served as a teaching hospital.In 1997, Hospital UKM (HUKM) was established as a teaching hospital for students of the Faculty of Medicine, UKM.
The administrative structure of HUKM was separated from the faculty and its head was a Hospital Director. When HUKM was first established, the positions of Dean and Hospital Director were held by one officer, but since 1998, the Faculty of Medicine has had its own Dean and HUKM its own Director.
